You will learn how to accurately measure and record important physiological data such as blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration rate, and body temperature - essential indicators of a patient's health status. We prioritize hands-on practice, ensuring you are adept at using various medical instruments, from sphygmomanometers to stethoscopes. Moreover, we focus on honing your observational skills, enabling you to detect any anomalies or significant changes in a patient's vitals, which can be crucial in emergency situations. By the end of this module, you will be well-equipped to perform vital signs assessments confidently, accurately, and professionally.
You will learn how to transform a home or birth center into a space that's conducive to childbirth, taking into account the unique needs of the birthing woman, her family, and the midwifery team. We'll walk you through how to identify and arrange necessary equipment and supplies, create a calming atmosphere, ensure appropriate sanitation, and make arrangements for possible emergency situations.
learn the critical importance of maintaining cleanliness, preventing infections, and ensuring the safety of both the mother and newborn during childbirth. We'll start by imparting the fundamental principles of sterile technique, showing you how to correctly use sterile gloves, instruments, and field set-ups. We will discuss the difference between clean, aseptic and sterile techniques and when to apply each. Simultaneously, we will introduce you to the concept of Universal Precautions, which involve treating all human blood and certain bodily fluids as if they are known to be infectious for HIV, HBV, and other bloodborne pathogens. This will cover safe handling and disposal of sharps, appropriate use of protective barriers like gloves and masks, and immediate response actions for potential exposure to infectious materials.
Under the guidance of experienced professionals, you will perform supervised venipunctures on training models and REAL LIFE pregnant client. This practical session is designed to help you become familiar with the feel and technique of performing a successful venipuncture, from locating suitable veins to properly inserting the needle, and drawing and handling the blood samples. Furthermore, you'll be encouraged to practice patient communication and comfort measures, simulating a holistic patient care experience. This interactive approach is not only a confidence booster, but it also ensures that you'll be fully prepared and competent in performing phlebotomy tasks in a real-world setting.
You will learn to master the techniques for monitoring fetal heart tones, understanding the normal range and recognizing any deviations that may indicate distress. Using tools such as Doppler devices, you will get the chance to practice listening to and interpreting fetal heart rates in a variety of simulated scenarios. In addition, we will guide you through the process of maternal abdominal examination, teaching you the systematic palpation techniques used to assess the position and wellbeing of the baby. With carefully guided hands-on practice, you will gain the confidence and skill to perform these sensitive and important tasks proficiently, ensuring the best care for mothers-to-be and their babies.
This practical segment of the course places you in a variety of simulated situations that mirror real-life emergencies, such as hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, cord prolapse, or fetal distress. You'll learn to identify the signs of these complications swiftly and accurately, allowing for timely interventions. We'll also train you in effective response techniques, focusing on prompt actions that can be crucial in these circumstances. This will include correct positioning, use of emergency medical equipment, administering first aid, and effective communication with the wider medical team. By combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice, we aim to ensure you are well-prepared to handle emergencies confidently and effectively, contributing to safer birth experiences for the mothers and babies in your care.
